Contemporary, Suspense, Winslow, WashingtonHazel Winslow is seventeen years old and already hassecrets to keep than she would like Hopefully soon she will be putting the tourist trap of a town she lives in behind her along with the unhappy past Though something seems to be happening in her small town She knows if she wants to protect her loved ones she needs to keep quiet about her uncle s sick cattle Until everyone in town starts acting strangely As the town is cut off from help long Contemporary, Suspense, Winslow, WashingtonHazel Winslow is seventeen years old and already hassecrets to keep than she would like Hopefully soon she will be putting the tourist trap of a town she lives in behind her along with the unhappy past Though something seems to be happening in her small town She knows if she wants to protect her loved ones she needs to keep quiet about her uncle s sick cattle Until everyone in town starts acting strangely As the town is cut off from help long festering lies and hatred end up exploding into terrifying violence An unexplainable madness is gripping the remote mountain town The only way Hazel is going to be able to save any lives is by confronting her own past and the dark history of her town Whatever the cost may be This is a suspenseful story with some romance The plot of this one takes some fantastic twists and turns and will have readers guessing just what is going to happen next and who will be the next to be affected The story line builds the suspense and doesn t stop until the end when everything is revealed The character are fascinating and seeing how each one reacts to what is happing in the small town makes for very interesting reading With the heroine being a teenager this is for young adults but anyone would find the plot line entertaining and will be pulled into the story and readers will keep turning the pages just to see where it will all end This is one suspense not to miss Readers will not be disappointed with this one at all

I got a free copy of this book from GoodReads The book was an interesting read the first half of the book goes by really fast You want to knowabout all the local mysteries of this community, the different characters and, most importantly, what is happening to them In the first 300 pages or so, the many inhabitants of Winslow make you care for them and see a little of yourself in them The second half of the book however cancels all this The main protagonist spends her time looking for I got a free copy of this book from GoodReads The book was an interesting read the first half of the book goes by really fast You want to knowabout all the local mysteries of this community, the different characters and, most importantly, what is happening to them In the first 300 pages or so, the many inhabitants of Winslow make you care for them and see a little of yourself in them The second half of the book however cancels all this The main protagonist spends her time looking for something to do While every other character in the novel is loosing their mind, it is a bit annoying to have this one sane person making the worst decisions she could possible make This being said, the complete explanation of what happened to the two was slowly revealed, in a way that kept me reading and finally rewarded me with a full and intelligent resolution in the end. This was solid, though very uneven, novel that will not please everyone, but that makes for some great food for thought on how fragile our minds really are

I won this book through Goodreads FirstReads.A fast paced, interesting, thought provoking novel about an entire town gone mad, and a whole lot of ghosts.I liked this novel, I didn t love it I wanted to because I really liked the idea and the writing style, and I liked the characters I thought Hazel was a bit annoying at first but then by the middle of the novel I d well and truly warmed up to her She was strong, without being completely fearless like a lot of protagonists in these types of bo I won this book through Goodreads FirstReads.A fast paced, interesting, thought provoking novel about an entire town gone mad, and a whole lot of ghosts.I liked this novel, I didn t love it I wanted to because I really liked the idea and the writing style, and I liked the characters I thought Hazel was a bit annoying at first but then by the middle of the novel I d well and truly warmed up to her She was strong, without being completely fearless like a lot of protagonists in these types of books The book was intense with a wonderfully cinematic quality that reminded me of horror movies and I was never really bored while reading it apart from near the end when things started to slow down However, I did feel like it was missing something, I don t know what Maybe it wasn t as edgy as I wanted it to be I also felt it was too long and could have been significantly shorter and still be just as good, if not better.Overall, I enjoyed reading this and I m glad I read it

This is the rare novel that, were it to be turned into a movie, one would say The movie is actually better The book s a great base, and has a lot going for it quite good writing, strong ideas, interesting characters if perhaps a few too many , a Slice of Americana setting easily rendered uncanny by the terrible events portrayed The main problem is that it s far too long to sustain the intensity the panicky urgency required of this type of horror writing A movie version would have li This is the rare novel that, were it to be turned into a movie, one would say The movie is actually better The book s a great base, and has a lot going for it quite good writing, strong ideas, interesting characters if perhaps a few too many , a Slice of Americana setting easily rendered uncanny by the terrible events portrayed The main problem is that it s far too long to sustain the intensity the panicky urgency required of this type of horror writing A movie version would have little trouble whittling down to get a much tighter story, and also a less didactic one.The denouement is also a bit weak, for a number of reasons Here are a couple that I can give without really spoiling anything 1 There is barely any discussion of the Incident s aftermath for most of the secondary characters that we re supposed to be caring about by the end the Rhone sisters, Hazel s grandmother, etc 2 There isn t really any ink spilled about the modern legal and media coverage that would surely follow We readers are already being asked to suspend our disbelief regarding lack of email and such the story is set in 2010 but you d never know it so this is a step too far. With better editing, this could have been a real achievement I also appreciate the extratextual materials that Voss created online to make the novel seem like a chronicle of true events, and I d be curious to read her future work.ETA I read the 12 12 version of this book It has since been republished by Harlequin, so perhaps the latter version went through another round of editing

Please don t let the two star rating mislead you, the book is very well written It flows very much like a horror movie, bang, and then a bit of drag, then bang in very good order The setting is beautiful, Voss clearly depicts the world in which her characters live, and the unspoken rules that govern them The only irritating thing was the repetition of names to locations, while typical in a small town, does become a bit confusing and annoying It might have helped to have a chart showing Please don t let the two star rating mislead you, the book is very well written It flows very much like a horror movie, bang, and then a bit of drag, then bang in very good order The setting is beautiful, Voss clearly depicts the world in which her characters live, and the unspoken rules that govern them The only irritating thing was the repetition of names to locations, while typical in a small town, does become a bit confusing and annoying It might have helped to have a chart showing the family relation of the characters as keeping track of aunts, uncles, and cousins in my own mind melded to well, everyone s related, or is about to be, which I associate withsouthern than northern towns That said, I m just not the sort who cares for protracted hinting at the secrets underneath, and while the story and intensity picks up over the pace of the novel, I didn t care about the characters This isn t because they are two dimensional, but they are not the sort I d cheer on surviving a horror story I just found nothing about them that made me care if they lived or died, which I think may be a greater failing on my part than the author s, since I m sure someone would feel connection to them I personally don t find unformed persons i.e teenagers to be all that interesting However, if you do end up caring about the characters its a rather intense ride, especially the last two hundred pages
